Learn how to make your own almond latte in the comfort of your own home. My rendition is made using almond milk for that creamy texture and signature froth. Almond extract, a sweetener of your choice and brewed chicory making it a great caffeine free beverage.
I'm buzzing right now because I'm happy to share this latte recipe with my lovely readers.
I know many people enjoy drinking, coffees, lattes, mochas and hot chocolate. It doesn't matter where you are in the world, most people enjoy these type of drinks especially in the Western Hemisphere.
While I am more of a hot chocolate kind of girl myself, lattes have a special place in my heart.
I used to shun Starbucks at one point until I realised that customers had the option to request plant based milk in their beverages.
I've tried it for a few of their drinks, making them vegan friendly and started to up the ante by making some homemade versions.
Homemade lattes
Making a habit of going to your favourite cafe/coffee shop can be expensive, taking a chunk out of your finances.
What if I told you that making your own latte at home was incredibly easy.
It's true and a game changer for sure! You get that same rich, smooth, creamy plant based texture plus being your own barista in the comfort of your own home.
You only need a few ingredients to create this amazing latte - almond milk, chicory, almond extract and a sweetener of your choice.
Ingredients you need
Almond milk - I use regular almond milk that is unsweetened and not the barista version. The reason being is while the barista milk is very creamy it contains a lot of sugars and filler ingredients. The good news is you can still achieve that frothiness without using barista milk.
Almond extract - A totally optional but recommended ingredient for a subtle hint of flavour and aroma.
Sweetener - I love to add maple syrup, just a small amount is needed for a hint of sweetness. This is an optional ad in ingredient.
Chicory - I'm using the roasted woody roots of this herbaceous plant. It's a caffeine free alternative to coffee, you still get that pseudo coffee flavour without the stimulant effects.
Reasons to make this beverage
- Great for people who want an alternative type of latte
- Contains no caffeine thus being stimulant free
- Doesn't give you that crash and burn coffee craving
- Completely dairy free and vegan friendly
- It's homemade so you have control over what ingredients .i.e almond extract you are adding
- Child friendly
The steps
- Divide the brewed chicory into two mugs.
- Heat the almond milk on medium heat until it's hot (not boiling) and steaming.
- Stir in the almond extract and maple syrup.
- Immediately remove the saucepan from the stove and pour the milk into both mugs.
- To make the froth, use a whisk/electrical frother or transfer the ¼ cup of milk into a blender until the milk is light and foamy.
- Distribute the froth over both mugs of latte.
- Serve immediately, while still hot.
Note and tips
- Be sure to brew the chicory in advance, you want it to be quite strong for a better taste.
- To brew the chicory, combine 2 tablespoons of chicory with ½ cups of hot water.
- For best results, serve/drink the latte while it is still hot.
- For a more prominent almond taste, add the almond extract.
- Keep a watchful eye when you are heating the milk, you want it to be steaming but not boiling/scorched milk.
- If you don't have an electric frother, use a blender, hand held whisk, immersion stick blender or a jar with a lid to create the froth.
- Make sure your chicory is labelled gluten free as some contain wheat or barley.
