If you have been following my blog since the beginning then you will quickly realise that I am partial to making own seasoning from scratch.
This is another seasoning recipe that can be made within a matter of minutes for so many steak or beef based recipes. Suitable for paleo and gluten free lifestyles.
Don't be fooled by the title of this post, this flavoursome stew seasoning mix compliments more than just a hearty stew.
I've used it for various types of red meat including, lamb, goat and mutton and it works like a treat. You even use it in my Plantain Lasagna too.
I do tend to use it more in different beef recipes so you can definitely use some on things like steak, curries, brisket etc.. with no problems.

Reasons to make homemade seasoning
- Easy to make with common pantry ingredients
- Hearty and flavoursome
- Free from additives and preservatives
- Multipurpose i.e use for various cut of red meat and different types.
- Easy to make in batches which last for several months
Ingredients you will need

The great thing about making your own beef stew seasoning is that you only need a handful of herbs and spices, most of which you probably already have in your kitchen cupboard.
- Paprika - Adds a lovely colour to the seasoning along with a mild, slightly sweet flavour.
- Black pepper -Gives the seasoning a little warmth and a subtle peppery kick.
- Garlic - Adds that delicious savoury flavour that works so well with beef.
- Onion - Complements the garlic and adds another layer of flavour to the seasoning.
- Cilantro (coriander) - Brings a slightly earthy, citrusy flavour to the blend.
- Chives - Add a mild onion-like flavour without being overpowering.
- Chilli flakes - Give the seasoning a little heat. Feel free to adjust the amount if you don't care for too much spice.
- Pink salt - Helps to bring out the flavours of the herbs and spices. You can adjust the amount to suit your taste.
The steps

- Add all of the ingredients to a spice grinder and mill into a fine consistency and store in an airtight container.
- If you don't have a grinder simply mix all of the ingredients together and store in a jar.
notes and tips
- For the best flavour, make sure your dried herbs and spices are still fresh and haven't been sitting in your cupboard for years.
- If you don't care for too much heat, reduce the amount of chilli flakes or leave them out altogether.
- Feel free to adjust the amount of pink salt to suit your taste, especially if you're using the seasoning alongside other salted ingredients.
- Make sure all the herbs and spices are evenly combined before transferring the seasoning to a jar.
- Keep your homemade beef stew seasoning in a clean, dry, airtight spice jar, away from direct sunlight, heat and moisture.
- For the best flavour, I recommend using the seasoning within 6 months, provided your spices were fresh when you made the blend.
- Don't be fooled by the name! This seasoning isn't just for beef stew. You can also use it to season steak, brisket, lamb, goat and mutton.
- Feel free to double or triple the ingredients if you regularly make beef dishes.
Frequently Asked Questions
What spices are good for beef stew?
Feel free to mix things up by adding rosemary, basil, smoked paprika, celery seed, parsley etc...
Can I use this seasoning for other meats?
Yes, absolutely! Don't be fooled by the name. You can use this seasoning for steak, brisket, lamb, goat and mutton. It's a versatile blend that works well with various red meat dishes.
Can I make this seasoning without salt?
Yes, you can leave out the pink salt if you prefer. Simply add salt separately when preparing your beef stew so you have more control over the seasoning.

Notes
- It is recommended to store your blended spice mix in a spice jar.
- To ensure good quality shelf life of your seasoning make sure to store in a pantry or somewhere dry and away from direct sunlight.
- Label and date the spice jar so you can easily identify the spice blend.
- It's best to use dried herbs and spices because they have a longer lifespan
- For best results, use the spice blend within a year of making it.
- Adding sodium is optional, I know some people, depending on the recipe, may want to add sodium to the actual dish instead. I prefer to include it in my blended mix but that decision is in your hands.
