Sea moss has gained popularity as a secret weapon for immunity, energy, and weight loss over the last few years.

Health professionals and dieticians can't stop talking about it. It's highly utilised in the Caribbean before it even gained SO much notoriety.

In terms of its mainstream recognition, we have to give thanks to the late Dr Sebi for really reinforcing the many positivity's of this wonderful superfood.

This trendy ingredient has 96 Vitamins and essential minerals that are vital for overall body health.

What is sea moss?

Sea moss is also called Chondrus crispus, Irish moss, or carrageen moss. It is a type of red algae native to the Atlantic regions.

Sea moss usually grows along the Atlantic coasts of Europe and North America.  It grows in various colors ranging from dark red color to dark purple, brownish purple, or greenish-yellow.

A nutritiously rich, relatively small sea algae that is high in proteins, minerals, and a good iron and sulphur source.

The moss has a sea-like odor, and it turns soft in water. Due to the ample amount of cell wall polysaccharides present in the sea moss, it turns into a jelly-like form when boiled.

The origins of sea moss

Sea moss or Irish moss is commonly seen around the shores of Ireland. Sea moss can also be found in the coastal regions of southern Spain, Iceland, and the western Baltic Sea.

This moss is also found on the Atlantic coasts of Canada, California, and the Caribbean shoreline.

Chondrus crispus or sea moss can be found growing on rocks from the subtidal zone all the way to the ocean bed.

Sea moss can grow even with a minimal amount of sunlight that helps increase the sea moss population.

Irish sea moss has vitamin E, which improves hair growth and can fight hair loss.

Sea moss is rich in iron contents and helps reduce iron deficiencies, one of the culprits behind hair loss problems.

Skincare/skin conditions

Tired of that oily skin? then sea moss can help you. Due to high sulphur content, seaweed has anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-microbial properties, making skin glow naturally by purifying it.

Due to sebum's excessive production, sea moss is effective against acne and other types of skin conditions.

Fertility

Irish sea moss can rejuvenate and boost both male and female fertility. Caribbean people have been using sea moss for ages for its positive effects on fertility.

Sea moss is said to increase testosterone and sperm count, in turn giving a fertility boost.

Vitamin B, zinc, calcium, and iodine are natural boosters present in the sea moss, which speed up the process of getting pregnant for women (Source)

Additional ways to use the gel

There are several different ways in which sea moss can be consumed.

Irish moss can be eaten or applied to skin and hair, depending upon the results desired. The following are some of the ways sea moss can be used.

Hair application

You can use the Irish sea moss externally to apply on your hair. To make the sea moss gel, all you need to do is soak the sea moss overnight.

Then blend the sea moss with two cups of water until a creamy smooth texture is achieved, add some essential oils, olive or avocado oil. Mix and refrigerate in a jar.

You can apply this paste directly onto the hair as a pre-shampoo, as a conditioner, or to style your hair.

Sea moss and smoothies

Easiest and the healthiest way to consume the sea moss gel is to prepare tasty weight loss smoothies.

The light taste of sea moss goes well with any fruits or veggies you’ll use, making the sea moss enriched smoothie deliciously awesome and healthy.

Gummy bears/Candy

Everyone likes gummy bears, adults and children alike. The best and fun way to boost your immunity is making delicious gummies at home using the sea moss gel without the added sugar and preservatives.

Don’t have enough time to prepare smoothies at home? Don’t fret! Blend maple syrup, cayenne pepper, ginger, and cinnamon with your homemade sea moss gel.

Mix the mixture in gelatine or agar agar and quickly transfer it to the gummy bear candy kit to shape. Freeze for an hour and enjoy.

These gummies have all the goodness to prevent you from cold, flu, allergies and viral infections.

Sea moss is getting public attention worldwide. In smoothies, gummies, other food recipes or can even use as a face mask for a healthy glow.

Apart from making smoothies and gummies with sea moss you can also use it as a natural occurring thickener in place of cornstarch recipes i.e for pudding, soup, stews and so fourth.

Beauty/face masks

The sea moss is an excellent source of collagen and is considered a superfood for youthful skin. You can make the Irish sea moss face mask quickly at home.

To make the sea moss gel mask, you need to mix a teaspoon of turmeric powder and two tablespoons of sea moss gel or apply two teaspoons of sea moss gel.

You can apply this mixture directly onto the skin 1-2 times a week. The Irish sea moss gel face mask moisturizes the skin, reduces dark spots, and makes the skin glow beautifully.

The steps

You must now be wondering how to make the actual gel yourself. Sea moss or Irish moss gel can be prepared in many ways.

steps1-6 the process of making the sea moss gel
  • Use a colander to thoroughly wash the sea moss (use your hands to rid the debris) in cold water.
  • Place the sea moss in a large bowl then pour enough water to cover the sea moss with.
  • Allow the raw sea moss to soak in water for several hours or overnight (during this time the sea moss will expand).
  • The following day you need to remove the sea moss from the water (you can use a slotted spoon or tongs to do so) then add the sea moss to a blender
  • Pour some water into the blender along with the sea moss, start with about 1-2 cups (you can use the same amount of fresh water if you want to) and add more if needed
  • Blitz the sea moss into a smooth jelly/gel consistency.
  • Transfer the blended gel into an airtight container and refrigerate.
  • Use accordingly.

List of reputable vendors

This is a list of reputable vendors that I know sell authentic dried sea moss

  • Vital Vegan (US)
  • Akeem Pierre (US)
  • Bush Doctor (UK Based, Etsy)
  • Genni Oil (UK based)

I will update this section and the actual post its self as I learn/research and gain more knowledge about sea moss.

Frequently asked questions

How do you know the gel has gone bad?

If the sea moss is spoiled, it will have a pungent aroma with possible signs of any greyish mold on top.

What does the gel taste like?

It's very very neutral in taste, you really cannot taste anything. It's like eating a thick odorless paste in my humble opinion.

What is the best way to store the gel?

The best way to store the gel is to keep it refrigerated at all times. Alternatively, you can freeze into small ice cubes

How much sea moss can you take on a daily basis?

It is recommended to have at least two tablespoons per day.

How can you tell if the sea moss is real and not fake?

If your sea moss has tiny tentacles with fine salt particles, it is real. It will also smell like the ocean, similar to seaweed and even have some debris.

Anything that is labelled as being made in "China" is fake as sea moss is naturally occurring and definitely NOT man made.

Without sounding biased, ideally, you want sea moss that is from the Atlantic shoreline that is labelled as "wildcrafted" or " wild harvested".

Where can you buy sea moss from?

Check out the post, just before the FAQ section where I have listed a few credible seller.

Also, you can find independent vendors/sellers on Amazon/Etsy (you will have to do your own research here)

I don't know all of them so I can only give you the names of the ones that I know for sure who are selling the real deal!

Notes and tips

  • Be sure to buy whole/dried sea moss that is "organic" "wildcrafted or "wild harvested".
  • Keep the gel refrigerated at all times.
  • Feel free to freeze any sea moss into small ice cubes.
  • The gel should last for up to 4 weeks refrigerated. However for maximum potency use within 3-4 days (that's just my personal opinion though!)
  • Only make what you need, it's okay to break the dried sea moss in half or quarters to make a very small batch of gel.
  • Do NOT buy sea moss that is refined i.e flakes or powder. This type of sea moss contains ZERO nutritional value.
  • Do NOT boil your sea moss, allow it to soak and expand in its own time.
  • Real sea moss should carry some debris with a slight smell of the ocean.

I see several flavored sea moses. Are they just as good (nutrient wise) as a regular plain sea moss? Also what is the difference between irish moss and the other sea moss? Which is better?

Irish moss and sea moss are now used interchangeably so I wouldn't worry about the name too much. I personally prefer to add my own flavour to plain sea moss because I know how it has been prepared and what's in it. My biggest concern about buying premade flavoured sea moss would be whether or not the sea moss has been processed (heat treated thus losing its nutritional value) or additional additives that might be used to preserve it. Definitely ask the vendor a lot of questions before committing to purchasing, if your plan is to do so. I hope that helps!

Thank you for the information. Finding a reputable company that sells sea moss can be a crap shoot but your suggestions are a great start.
