Move over potatoes and say hello to these parsnip fries, they are the perfect nutritional way to satisfy your craving for french fries using your air fryer.
In the dead of winter parsnips are just here, there and everywhere so why not make some fries with them.
They are naturally sweet, delicious with the macro-nutrients that your body needs.
While I was out grocery shopping for some seasonal vegetables I came across a bag of parsnips which were dirt cheap due to the time of year.
I wasn't planning on purchasing any parsnips, at least not right now but the price was too tempting. Anyway, I'm so glad that I did because I made these amazing air fryer parsnip fries.
Trust me, when I tell you how delicious they are and so simple to make.
It's simply a case of peeling the parsnips (if you wish) drizzling them in olive oil and a seasoning of your choice and then frying them in your air fryer and voila, your fries are done!
Ingredients you will need
Reasons to make these fries
- Very easy to make
- They are just as tasty as my Zucchini Fries
- You can double or triple the batch if you wish
- They are naturally sweet
- You can use my seasoning or a seasoning of your choice
- They won't compromise your lifestyle goals i.e weightloss, healthy eating
The steps
- Preheat your air fryer
- Scrub the parsnips, thoroughly wash them and blot them dry.
- Cut the tops/bottoms of each parsnip.
- Slice them into fries of your desired thickness.
- Place the parsnips in a large bowl then drizzle with olive oil and season with garlic granules, maple syrup, parsley and pink salt
- Use tongs or your hands to toss your fries to evenly distribute the seasoning.
- Place the fries in the basket (you may need to do this in batches).
- Set your air fryer to 180c/356f for about 7 minutes (mine took 7 minutes yours may take roughly 12 minutes without preheating).
- Shaking the fryer basket to ensure an even distribution of cooking, halfway through.
- Re-season again just before serving.
Do you have to peel the skin off?
I personally prefer to peel the skin off however you can leave it on if you wish. Just make sure to thoroughly wash your parsnips and blot them off dry.
Can you cut the parsnips ahead of time?
Although this recipe isn't focused on time consuming, if you want to really reduce your time in the kitchen then I would recommend cutting your parsnips to size before you're ready to fry them.
Place them in a zip lock bag and refrigerate until you are ready to use.
Are parsnips the same as carrots?
Although parsnips are closely similar to carrots, they are NOT the same. They do bear the same shape, but the biggest contrast between them is their flavour.
Parsnips have a slight licorice taste to them and are distinctly sweeter when roasted especially when drizzled with some sweetener.
What dip can you use for these fries?
Notes and tips
- Don't use excess oil, less is more. Air fryer fries are crispy when less oil is used. Too much oil results in mushy/soggy fries.
- Make sure you are using LARGE PARSNIPS not small ones.
- If you double the recipe adjust the quantity of oil/syrup to double the amount.
- I don't recommend freezing the fries after cooking. You can re-heat but do avoid freezing them.
- Use whatever seasoning you like, I like to keep it simple with some parsley, garlic granules, pink salt and maple syrup.
- Make sure to scrub the parsnips and thoroughly wash and dry them before slicing them.
- Slice your fries according to the thickness you desire.
- The amount of seasoning used by myself is a rough guide. Feel free to adjust the amount according to your reference.

Here in Italy, parsnips are sadly not here, there and everywhere! But, I love them and know one shop I can get them. So, I often make the trip just for the parsnips!! I usually roast them but your parsnip fries look great. Will be trying this recipe next time I have parsnips!
Charla
I'm so sorry to here that. Definitely try fries when you get a chance to.
