Are you a vegan or lead a dairy free lifestyle and miss the taste of chocolate mousse?

Well look no further and try this vegan style mousse. This recipe is incredibly simple, containing only 6 ingredients, yes that's right, a whooping SIX! is all you need to achieve this wonderful result.

    close up of the mousse

I remember when I first toyed with the idea of making chocolate mousse with avocados being the star of the show.

It was an epic fail because like most vegan/dairy free recipe there's plenty of trial and error to be had.

After several attempts and pestering the heck out of my family I was finally able to nail it.

It felt like someone had just given me the winning lottery ticket, at the time which is how I felt the day I mastered my Key Lime Pudding recipe.

Now I'm ready to showcase this vegan mousse - it's so velvety smooth just like this Avocado Chocolate Crumble especially when paired with some freshly ripe avocados. Trust me it works!

You more than welcome to switch things up by using Date Paste instead of using a liquid sweetener.

The avocados are like the vegan replacement for eggs, acting like an emulsifier, holding the entire structure together along with being a boost of healthy fats.

    Ingredients you will need

    ingredient for avocado chocolate mousse

    • Avocados: Make sure you are using avocados that are more on the soft side and definitely not firm/over ripe.
    • Cacao: Use "raw cacao" this is the unadulterated vegan version of cocoa powder.
    • Sweetener: Use whatever sweetener you like agave, coconut nectar, maple etc...
    • Vegan chocolate: This is optional but recommended for a silky smooth chocolate mousse
    • Nut butter: Healthy fat that helps to mask the avocado taste.
    • Almond Milk: This is my favourite neutral tasting milk, you can use another if you wish!

How to make avocado chocolate mousse

steps 1-2 adding ingredients and pureeing it

    • Cut the avocados in half, make sure to cut around the big stone inside and scoop out the pulp.
    • Place all of the ingredients in a food processor fitted with an S blade.
    • Start to blend all of the ingredients until a smooth consistency is achieved.

What can you use in place of avocado?

    You can use any of the following;

    • Banana
    • Coconut cream
    • Aquafaba

Can you make this recipe keto friendly?

Yes, you can make this recipe keto friendly by using monkfruit, xylitol, stevia or erythritol.

How long does this mousse last in the refrigerator?

This mousse should keep in your refrigerator for roughly 3 days.

    Notes and tips

    • Jazz things up a bit. Feel free to add some garnish including coconut, cacao nib, nuts or seeds.
    • To mask the avocado taste it's best to add another ingredient like vegan chocolate or nut butter. If you don't have any to hand simply add more cacao powder to compensate.
    • Make sure to store in the refrigerator until you are ready to serve.
    • Be sure to melt your chocolate before adding it to your food processor.
    • You can make this recipe using an immersion stick or blender (use the low setting).

I'm glad this comes together so quickly because I don't think my kids have the patience to wait that long until they can devour it, haha!
