There are so many people out there who are having to change their dietary requirements for a number of reasons and this includes the milk that they are drinking.
When we think of plant based milks, the vast majority of the time they tend to contain nuts which can be problematic for people with allergies.
Also, some people simply do not like the taste of nut milks and this is where hemp milk comes into play as a nut free alternative.
What are hemp seeds?
Hemp seeds are often called hemp hearts, they are highly nutritious and contain 9 amino acids.
A plant in the botanical class of cannabis sativa cultivars grown for commercial and consumable use.
Commercial items include textiles, clothing, paper, rope and so fourth and consumables include food and animal feed.

The benefits of hemp seeds
Hemp seeds contain a plethora of health benefits;
- High in a complete source of protein (amino acids which are building blocks)
- A great source of essential fatty acids i.e alpha-linolenic acid (a type of omega 3)
- High in fibre which aids healthy bowel movements, suppress the appetite, stabilizes blood sugar levels.
- Minerals and vitamins - magnesium, potassium, vit E and B, iron, zinc and phospherous.
- Protects the brain against neurological conditions.
- Optimises heart health
- Reduces inflammation and promote healthy skin (
- Hemp - it goes without saying that you will need hemp seeds that are shelled or hulled heep seeds to make your milk. These are the seeds which have had the outer shell removed sometimes known as "hemp heart".
- Water - I use filtered water for all of my plant based milk recipes.
- Vanilla and dates - these are optional ad ins, if you want to include them.

The Steps
- Add the hemp seeds (hearts), water and any optional ad ins to your blender.
- Put the lid on and blitz into a smooth consistency.
- Use a cheese cloth of nut milk bag to strain the milk into a large bowl (this is an optional step, if you don't do this you may notice some of grit at the bottom when you bottle it).
- Squeeze out any excess liquid.
- Store the milk in a mason jar or jug in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
Notes and tips
- I highly recommend using a high powered blender i.e a Blendtec or Vitamix.
- You will need hulled/seeds or hemp which is also known as "hemp hearts" to make this milk.
- If you choose not to strain the milk it is normal for segments to settle at the bottom.
- If stored in a container/jar, shake before using the milk.
- The hemp milk should keep for up to 5 days.
- This milk is also suitable for home freezing.
- For a creamier, more concentrated milk, use less water.

- 4 cups filtered water (946ml)
For optional ad ins
- 2 dates pitted
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (4g)
- ¼ teaspoon cinnamon (0.5g)
- 1 tablespoon matcha (15g)
