Give your body a total factory reset with this delicious cabbage detox soup. Made with bell peppers, carrots, celery and cajun seasoning to give it that hint of spiciness. Instant pot and stovetop friendly.

    bowl of soup with mugs

Cabbage soup is extremely nourishing and very good for the body. This vegetable soup is one of many gate ways to a healthier, vibrant new you.

Before I delve into the full details of this recipe post I will put a little disclaimer out first. This soup is NOT a diet, a fad or a quick fix weight loss solution so please be mindful of that.

This recipe is simply showing you how to cleanse and replenish your body. I don't subscribe to diets, fads etc..

I believe that a person should look at revising their eating habits and embark on a lifestyle change on a long term basis.

We all know at the beginning of the year is when so many of us are looking to get fit and healthy which most of us make as a New Years resolution.

This is where my spicy cabbage detox soup comes in handy. Cabbage acts as a natural diuretic which means it expels any toxins (the bad stuff) via our kidneys.

It's also low in carb and contains zero fat making it even more ideal to incorporate into clean eating just like my Caribbean Detox Soup or this Vitamix Tomato Soup.

Although cabbage is healthy, it can be pretty boring at the best of times which why I decided to add some homemade cajun seasoning.

Besides, spices have been known to harbour their own health benefits and great for facilitating wellness so this addition is an added bonus.

    Soup with two spoons

    Reasons to detox

    • Rid the body of any toxins
    • Prepare the body for new eating habits
    • Cleanse the internal organs
    • Weight loss
    • Curb any cravings i.e sugar
    • Overall wellbeing

If any or all of the above apply to you, then you definitely need to have a bowl or two of this soup.

    The steps

    step1-6 sauteing the vegetables

    • On medium heat, add the olive oil.
    • Proceed to saute the onion, garlic and ginger until soft and translucent.
    • Add the bell peppers and celery and cook for 2-3 minutes.
    • Sprinkle in the seasoning - parsley, black pepper and parsley.
    • Stir in the chopped tomatoes and add a small amount of the cajun seasoning (do this in stages so you get the right level of heat/spiciness).
    • Add the cabbage, bay leaves and pour in the vegetable broth.
    • Bring the pot to a rolling boil and reduce to medium/low heat and simmer for 30-40 minutes (add more vegetable stock if needed).
    • During that time, add some cajun seasoning (to your preference and pink salt if needed)
    • Remove the bay leaves if possible.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Which cabbage works best for this recipe?

I would recommend using cabbage with thicker leaves. That would be red, white or green cabbage (the one that is a round shape).

Don't use cabbage that is leafy as they tend to wilt when water logged and loose a lot of their volume when cooking.

How long does this soup last?

The soup should last for about 2-3 days. You will want to place the soup in an airtight container and leave in the refrigerator.

Is this a freezer friendly recipe?

Yes, you can pour your soup into little freezer friendly containers/tubs so that it is equally portioned.

It should hold up for 2-3 months when frozen. When are ready to serve, simply defrost before heating up (best to re-heat on the stovetop)

    How spicy is the soup?

It's not extreme heat but I do recommend adding the cajun seasoning according to your heat threshold as heat tolerance is very subjective.

Do you have any wholesome soup recipes?

Yes, Red Pepper Tomato Soup, Roasted Cauliflower Soup, Green Pea Soup, Creamy Mushroom Soup

    Notes and tips

    • This is the recipe that you will need for my Homemade Cajun Seasoning.
    • Feel free to add additional vegetables if you wish.
    • You can use my Homemade Vegetable Broth or using store bought make sure if it low sodium and gluten free.
    • If you can't get chopped tomato in its juice use a combination of passata with fresh chopped tomatoes.
    • Remember the amount of cajun seasoning you use will be subjective.
    • You will need a saucepan or stockpot that holds at least 2 quarts/1.8 litres.
    • Chop the cabbage to your preference. I like to cut mine into long stripes, but do what works best for you.

Delicious! Thank you for sharing this - I had everything leftover from New Years celebrations so this caught my eye. We are enjoying this right now. Please tell me where you found those cups/mugs in you photo. They are unique and I like the of them.

Thank you so much Kathy, I'm so glad you liked the recipe. The cups/mugs are from a store called "Tiger". It's a Danish store that sells very unique kitchenware. I think you might be able to order online too.

We could all use a good detox now and then. I'm wondering if you have ever tried adding any protein to this soup like ground turkey or seafood. I was just looking into buying lobster so I am thinking of ways to cook with it.

I've always loved cabbage soup! Not so sure why it gets such a bad image or this interesting "diet/detox" image but hey, if it can do that and taste this delicious, I'm in!

I don't do fads either. This soup sounds easy to make. I have a friend that's very into detoxing, fasting, meal prep and running that would love this soup.

In the '90s, a Cabbage Soup that went to the (Cabbage Soup Diet) was similar but much different, and the soup was delicious. I'm interested in making this recipe to see if I like it better. It sounds excellent for a detox soup. Have a great day!
