Learn how to make this tropical non alcoholic punch made from a combination of fresh orange juice, pineapple juice, lime, rum alternative and my homemade grenadine syrup. Great to serve at a special occasion or drink on a daily basis without being intoxicated.

2 red coloured drinks with garnish

This is the time of year where people like to crack up the barbeque grill, eat lots of salad and make lots of summer time alcoholic beverages.

You guys already know that I faithfully cater to my alcohol free readers.

Sure some people have laughed at my alternatives but on the flip side of things, lots of people actually appreciate them.

At one point I was tempted to throw in the towel and just make drinks with actual alcohol content but I never folded.

Anyway, while I know mocktails might not be as exciting as their alcohol counterpart, there's definitely room for a mocktail or two.

I make these drinks for people who cannot consume alcohol for any number of reasons, judgement free.

Whether it's due to health reasons, lifestyle, driving or you simply may not care for the taste of rum, it's okay because I got you covered!

What is rum punch?

In short, it is a beverage that's made from rum (usually 2 variations, light/dark, fruit juice, lime and some syrup (grenadine/strawberry/sugar).

All of the ingredients are combined together and served in a glass. This drink would typically be found at events like cook outs, parties, festivals and so fourth.

As a general rule of thumb rum punch usually constitutes - "one of sour, two of sweet, three of strong and four of weak".

About this rum free drink

This drink is very simple to whip up, most of the ingredients are readily available excluding one which I will discuss more later.

I don't tend to follow any ratio with my version of punch because it is alcohol free and just go by balancing taste more than anything.

I like to use freshly squeezed juice that has been bottled as opposed to extracting it myself but you are more than welcome to use a juice extracter if you want to.

I generally like to use 2 fruit juice drinks - pineapple and orange generally pair very well together but there is no reason why you can't use another tropical duo or even a trio of fruit juices.

To give this drink a more realistic "punch" vibe I have added a rum alternative, a non alcoholic spiced spirit.

This yields rum flavouring without the booziness, making the punch safe for drivers, those who are abstaining from alcohol for health reasons.

Maybe you just want something which reminds you of alcohol without the effects of a hangover.

The lime is the sour aspect, you only need a small amount so it doesn't technically make your punch "sour" at all.

It actually helps to counterbalance the sweetness from my homemade grenadine syrup.

Ingredients you need

Ingredients for the Caribbean rum punch
  • Orange and pineapple juice - I'm using freshly squeezed orange and pineapple juice. It's more convenient to buy juice that is fresh and bottled than making your own (unless you want to).
  • Lime juice - This is to supplement the sour aspect that plays a common role in many rum punch drink recipes.
  • Rum alternative - I'm using a drink called "Clean R" which is a non-alcoholic spiced beverage and this is the part which replaces the actual rum content.
  • Grenadine syrup - this yields a red/dark hue with a hint of sweetness.

The steps

Steps 1-4 adding the juice and the alcohol free rum
  • In a large bowl or jug, pour in the orange juice, pineapple juice, rum alternative, lime juice and homemade grenadine syrup.
  • Use a spoon/ladle to stir so all of the flavours meld.
Steps 5-8 adding the lime and syrup
  • Do a taste test and add more of any of the above ingredients if required.
  • Transfer into glasses and serve accordingly.

Notes and tips

  • Feel free to double or triple the quantity of punch if needed.
  • In terms of rum alternative I used a brand called "CleanCo/Clean R" it's a spiced infused drink that is available on Amazon UK.
  • Your rum alternative might be different from mine, depending whereabout you are located so you might need to make a small "test batch" before hand.
  • This is the recipe link that you will need for my homemade Grenadine Syrup Recipe
  • The colour of the rum punch may not be a vibrant and red as you are used to because my syrup doesn't contain any additives.
  • Remember to do a taste test and tweak the drink accordingly.
  • Keep the punch refrigerated for up to 5 days.
