Learn how to make some turmeric shots infused with fresh lime, ginger, fresh orange, black pepper, extra virgin olive oil with an optional hint of sweetener without having to rely on using a juicer.

Shot on a plate

If you have never had or even made a turmeric shot to all of my health enthusiastic people, you are in for a treat.

I've been making my own shots for awhile now, because they are very simple to make and you can be very creative with how you make them.

Turmeric is very much trending in the world of health and well-being, it used in food, drinks and beauty regimes.

I'm going to show you how to make these nifty turmeric shots made with fresh ginger, lime, orange, extra virgin olive oil and black pepper (you can add sweetener too).

What is a turmeric shot?

A turmeric shot in a drink made from turmeric that is typically served in a small serving.

You might see the drink being served in a little shot glass or small plastic bottle (usually in a store).

They are taken in small doses because the whole concept is to give a concentrated dose of goodness to the body.

You can find these shots in a number of different flavours, made with various fruit, vegetables, herbs and/or spices.

What do ginger turmeric shots do?

Turmeric has been used my Indians for thousands of years, not just as a spice but also for medicinal properties.

Have you ever wondered why curry dishes have that yellow hue? Yes, you've guessed it! Turmeric attributes to the colour.

The curcumin is one of the most active compounds in turmeric. It has anti inflammatory effects and high levels of antioxidants.

Both of these are important warding off foreign invaders that can damage or harm the body as well as help to promote a positive wellbeing;

  • Lower the risk of heart disease
  • Protect the body from free radicals
  • Curcumin can aid with new neurons in the brain to fight the degenerative process.
  • The anti inflammatory compounds can help with arthritis
  • Anti aging properties (source)

Even though I have only highlighted a few reasons as to why turmeric should be introduced to your lifestyle, ginger has similar health benefits too;

  • Good for cramp/sore muscles
  • Helps to alleviate nausea
  • Contains germ fighting compounds
  • It's anti inflammatory properties help to ease swelling
  • The bio active molecules may slow down the growth of cancer in some cancers
  • Lowers blood sugars and cholesterol (Ingredients needed to make the shots
    • Turmeric and ginger - I like to use fresh ingredients where possible to make my shots. If you are fortunate enough to have access to fresh turmeric root then I urge you to use that, alternatively you can use ground form instead.
    • Orange juice/lime juice - the juice is extracted from fresh orange/lime and helps to flavour the recipe.
    • Black pepper/extra virgin olive oil - enhances the absorption of curcumin.
    • Maple syrup - optional, used to add a hint of sweetness.

Reasons to make your own shots from scratch

    • Fresh potent, nutritious ingredients are used
    •  No cheap/artificial fillers .
    • Contains natural occurring sugars from the juice that is used.
    • No need to plastic bottles/recycling when you can use shot glasses
    • Save a ton of money by making your own.

    The steps

Steps1-4 making the shots in a blender
    • Place the turmeric root (add the ground turmeric if you are using that instead), ginger, orange, lime, black pepper, extra virgin olive oil and sweetener (if you are using) and water to a blender.
    • Blitz to make a smooth consistency.
    • Strain the mixture in a fine mesh sieve or use a cheesecloth to extract the juice.
    • Pour the juice into shot glasses/bottles.

    Notes and tips

    • Any leftover pulp and be frozen in a ice cube tray and/or used in a drink or smoothie i.e Orange Pineapple Banana Smoothie
    • For best results, please use fresh ingredients where possible for a higher quality/potent taste.
    • These shots can be taken on a daily basis.
    • The amount of shots will vary depending on the size of your glass. I made a total of 6 (2oz/60m) capacity.
    • Any leftover shots should be stored in secured bottles and refrigerated for up to 5 days. This is to ensure maximum potency, less the chances of the compounds breaking down
    • Feel free to jazz things up by adding apples, mango, pears, peaches, pineapple, cayenne, virgin coconut oil and so fourth.

Hi Bridget, I'm not sure what you're asking here. Seems like you have already been freezing and drinking the shots already? If so, then just continue with that pattern. I hope that helps!
