Learn how to air fry some delicious canned pineapple rings. They are fruity, sweet, zesty, slightly spicy, cheap and very easy to prepare (no chopping and peeling needed so beginner friendly). Perfect to serve as an appetiser or side dish, pair wells with any main course and makes an amazing dessert.

Pineapple rings on a plate with garnish

Who doesn't love some pineapple? I feel like pineapple is a fruit that the majority of people just seem to enjoy, along with mango too.

I love pineapple, I like to eat it neat but I have tried grilling it, infact I have a Grilled Pineapple Slices recipe here already on the blog, that you should check out.

    Can you air fry pineapple?

Absolutely! Just like any fruit which can be cooked in the air fryer, pineapples are no exception to the rule.

This recipe is perfect for those pineapple lovers out there, you get that deep caramelised flavour from the use of raw cane sugar and charrred edges without having to use a barbecue grill.

The air fryer is a pretty amazing gadget (without sounding biased) and is up there results wise along side a barbecue grill.

You get the zestiness from the lime juice and a subtle warmth and spicey kick from the combination of nutmeg, cinnamon, chilli and paprika powder.

If you have never tried air frying fruit, more specifically pineapple before then you are in for a real treat.

This recipe is perfect to eat on its own or plays a great role along side any sweet or savoury dish.

If you are the type that adds pineapple to a stir fry or pizza then this recipe has your name written ALL over it, guilt free (forget about the naysayers).

    Canned VS Fresh pineapple

We all know that fresh produce is always best and the preferred option. However, in this econonic climate not everyone can afford to purchase fruit fruit which is why I used canned.

The good news is you still get most of the nutritional value from using canned fruit (in juice).

Canned fruit also has a longer shelf life, unlike fresh produce that needs to be used within a short period of time.

You also have the advantage of using canned pineapple at your leisure, it's in the pantry, ready to be used, anytime, how convenient!

Another 2 keys points to keep in mind is accessibility and chopping/peeling fresh pineapple.

Not everyone has access to fresh pineaple which is where the canned form has some leverage.

Chopping and peeling pineapple can be overwhelming and a chore for some which is another reason why I tailored this recipe to be novice friendly.

    The steps

Steps 1-4 mixing the dry ingredients with the lime juice
    • In a large bowl place the raw cane sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, paprika, red pepper flakes and scotch bonnet pepper powder then whisk to combine.
    • Squeeze in the lime juice and whisk again to create a wet rub.
    • Carefully place the pineapple slices in the bowl.
    • Tilt the bowl to the side and use a spoon to baste the pineapple slices several times.
    • Refrigerate the bowl of pineapple for up to 30 minutes, occasionally basting the pineapple throughout the given time.
Steps 5-8 basting the pineapple and air frying it
    • Preheat the air fryer.
    • Place the pineapple rings in the air fryer basket (you may need to do this in batches depending on the capacity of your unit) and reserve the liquid that is in the bowl.
    • Air fry @ 190C/375F for 12-15 minutes.
    • Baste the pineapple rings frequently and turn them over half way through.

    Notes and tips

    • Depending on the capacity of your air fryer basket you may need to cook them in batches.
    • Any leftover pineapple should be refrigerated - wrapped tightly or in an air tight container and consumed within 2 days.
    • To re-heat the pineapple just place in the air fryer basket for a few minutes.
    • Don't overcrowd the air fryer basket.
    • Keep in mind that the air fryer time is an estimate and may vary depending on your unit.
    • When using canned pineapple make sure it's pineapple in juice only not syrup and thoroughly drain and blot the fruit dry.

They came out amazing. Loved the subtle heat and sweetness! We had with pulled pork sandwiches and coleslaw at our little neighborhood get-together yesterday afternoon. Everyone loved them!

This is such a great idea and I love how I can serve this with chicken for dinner or with ice cream as a dessert too.
