These apple wedges are so delicious, tender with a crispy gluten free coating. A homemade snack that is highly addictive and perfect for game day or just to eat on a whim.
Calling all apple fans, if you like apple fries or just anything that contains apple then these wedges are a must try. They are incredibly simple, tasty and more-ish too.
Apples are one my favorite fruits because they are so accessible here. Even though apples tend to be associated with the fall/autumn, you can purchase them all year round which is why I love them so much.
Fortunately, I snagged a great deal at my local farmers market recently, so good that I couldn't resist purchasing a bunch of apples.
While I had no plans to make an apple recipe, this purchase got me thinking about a few of my favourite recipes.
My initial thoughts were to make some Apple Crisp but I'm pretty much over that, at least right now I am.
Then I decided to make this these air fryer apple wedges - tasty, simple, no gluten and highly addictive. I promise if you follow these instructions, you will be in love with them too.
No deep fat frying is required, it's all made in the air fryer, using savoury breadcrumbs that need a little sweetener and cinnamon to bring out the flavour.
The Steps
- Preheat your air fryer
- Start by using a peeler to remove the apple peel and discard.
- Slice the apples in half then into quarters (you will need a total of 10 wedges from each apple).
- Use the knife to slice away the core and discard.
- Set up a bowl of cold water with 1 teaspoon of pink salt and place the apples in the bowl (this will stop them from becoming discoloured).
- Set up your dredging station in this order - melted butter, breading and the air fryer basket at the end.
- Use your fingers to dunk the apple wedges in the melted butter, place the apple in the bowl with the breading and press down then use a spoon to pile the breadcrumbs onto on the apple wedge (almost as if you are burying it). Then use your forefinger and thumb to grasp the ends on the apple, shake off any excess breading and place in the basket. Repeat this step for the remaining pieces.
- Set your air fryer to 190c/375f for 12-15 minutes (set the unit for 15 minutes but start to check around 12 minutes).
- Once cooked allow to cool for 5 minutes before serving.
Frequently Asked Questions
I had a massive epic fail when I tried to use the following - coconut flour, almond flour/meal with tapioca starch. I tried numerous times and just couldn't get any of the aforementioned to stick.
Use apples that are naturally sweet or have a mild sweetness to them. You will want to use any of the following apples - cox, gala, red delicious or pink lady.
Don't use green apples i.e granny smith or bramley, these are less sweet and more tart in taste.
Make sure the dairy free butter is completely melted, you also want to make sure each apple wedge is completely saturated with the butter.
Press down when adding coating the apples, use your thumb and forefinger (index) to hold the wedges.
You will also want to make sure the apple wedges are air fried used crispy/golden. If under cooked the coating is more unlikely to not hold up.
No, they won't hold up once frozen, they taste best when served immediately.

Notes and tips
- The best breadcrumbs to use for this recipe is Paxo gluten free breadcrumbs or Asda (Free from) breadcrumbs but you can use GF graham crackers if they are available in your country (they are not available in the UK).
- The dipping sauce is optional and taken from my Grilled Pineapple Recipe.
- Once the breadcrumbs have been applied, try not to keep touching the wedges i.e moving them around, just transfer them to the fryer basket.
- Over touching the breading increase the chances of the coating coming off.
- Make sure the dairy free butter is completely melted at all times and not semi solid (very important!!).
- A small amount of sweetener is needed to compensate and yield a sweet coating.
- Be sure to peel the apples prior to slicing the wedges as the coating will stick a lot better when this is done.
- Peel both apples at the same time, to prevent them from being discoloured place the apple wedges in a bowl with 1 teaspoon of pink salt in water but make sure to rinse off the salt water before dredging.
