water with pineapple chunks and mint in a jar

If you're a health enthusiast like me then chances are you're probably seen a load of fruit infused water circulating the internet. Fruit infused water is so refreshing, especially on a hot summer's day.

They also make the best endless beverage, as you only need to top up with water - how cool is that?

Whenever the summer decides to rear it's head, because we all know summer is not guaranteed in England.

That's when I reach for chilled beverages like my Sea Moss Drink and rotate that with some Jamaican Carrot Juice.

If you're a punch kind of person then some Soupsop Punch will do you the world of good.

What is infused water?

Infused water is simply where cold water is immersed in fruit, herbs or vegetables of your choice.

The chosen ingredient(s) are added to a jug, pitcher or glass with the water and steeped until the flavour permeates.

How long should you infuse fruit in water?

As a general rule of thumb, the longer to leave the ingredients to infuse for the more concentrated the taste.

I normally leave the water to infuse overnight before consuming it. Also, it is perfectly okay to replenish the ingredients with water for up to a weak depending on what fruit/vegetables you use.

For example, citrus fruit can take on a bitter note so it's best to infuse and discard the fruit within 3-4 days. The same principle applies to certain herbs like basil too.

Due to the longivity being so subjective you may just want to play it safe by steeping anything for up to 4 days, discard and then drink the fruit water within 5 days of making it.

Can you eat the fruit after steeping it?

I suppose you could if you really wanted to BUT.... you will most likely be disappointed with the taste.

It will probably be over saturated and flavourless....you have been warned!!

Reasons to make fruit water

It's not uncommon for people to loathe water or simply find it boring, that's why this pineapple mint infused water is the perfect way to drink enough water for the day.

  • You can add whatever fruit, herbs or vegetable you wish, the world is your oyster and you are in complete control.
  • It's a great way to use up any leftover fruit/ veggies or even the peel.
  • Water not only hydrates the body but rids debris.
  • Great for aiding any dietary/lifestyle goals
  • Easy to make and not to mention affordable.
  • Low in calories
  • Curbs the appetite (leaving a fuller feeling).

The preparation

  • There are no written rules for making pineapple water, it's really a matter of taste.
  • The more fruit you add, the more concentrated the flavour of the water. It also helps to steep for a number of days for a stronger taste.
  • I added about a cup's worth of fruit, a few slices of cucumber, let it steep and simply replenished my water bottle accordingly.

Storage

It's best to keep your water refrigerated especially during those hot sweltering days. You can also make individual glasses of fruit water and just top up to suit.

To make your fruit water more portable it's also a good idea to use a mason jar or a water bottle.

Crowd pleaser - Try using a jug/pitcher or even a water dispenser which I'm sure your guests will appreciate it.

Flavour variations

Feel free to jazz things up by using any of the following ingredients;

Berries: Strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, gooseberries, cranberries

Exotic fruit: Guinep, june plum, mango, starfruit, sweet jackfruit, watermelon, guava, grapefruit, tamarind, orange

Vegetables: Celery, zuchini, peppers, carrots

Herbs: Thyme, basil, oregano, parsley, cilantro, sage, rosemary

Spices: Caraway seeds, cinnamon stick, ginger cube, black peppercorns

Notes and tips

  • If you are using spices make sure to use them whole because ground spices will only float as bits in your water.
  • If you want your water to taste more concentrated, leave it to steep overnight or for at least 4 hours.
  • Keep your fruit water refrigerated at all times.
  • If you are making a single glass of fruit water then use a straw to sip to separate the fruit/vegetable from the water.
  • For best results remove any fruit, herbs or vegetables from the water up to 3 days after making it and discard.
  • Double, triple or quadruple the batch of fruit/veg/herbs if required.
  • It's okay to use frozen fruit and vegetables to make this water.

I should do this especially come summer. In the Maine winters I do a winter version with spices. in a kettle I put fresh ginger, stick cinnamon, mint leaves (if I have some), whole cloves and allspice and keep it on the stove. As I take some out I replenish with more water as it too gets strong over time.

Thanks for commenting David, your winter version sounds great. All those spices mentioned are generally warming so I can only imagine how it would taste. I'm definitely going to give it a try.

I love this recipe. This is great for water drinkers, like myself, to add some flavor.

I follow a gluten free diet also. I just discovered plantains, my new favorite thing, and recently posted plantain chips on my site. I must try your green plantain fries recipe soon!

This looks so bright and beautiful and refreshing! I just want a straw! And you are right, we absolutely all need to drink more water. I keep my water bottle with me throughout the day, but I still probably don't get enough. I think adding some fun flavors like this would certainly encourage me to drink up!
