Learn how to cook organic corn on the cob in foil using your air fryer. Yes, that's right a total game changer method, virtually no prep time required and you only need 4 ingredients. Delicious, moist, buttery cameralized corn, that is ready in no time.
I've already got some corn and cornmeal recipes on the blog but it feels like it was forever since I last made one.
This is a vegan air fryer recipe, speaking of which don't forget to check out my Air Fryer Oyster Mushrooms and Jerk Tofu recipe.
Corn on the cob is very popular especially during the summer/warmer months. Whenever I think of sweetcorn I associate it with BBQ season.
Most people like to grill it or opt for the oven roasted method. Well you guys know I'm all about my air fryer and love to use it for EVERYTHING.
Including cooking some corn, this recipe is probably the easiest air fryer recipe you will make because everything comes together very easy.
Most of the ingredients that the recipe calls for are ones that you should already have to hand, especially if you follow my recipes - vegan butter, all purpose seasoning, pink salt and black pepper.
You will also need some foil to make foil wraps. The foil allows the corn to cook by way of steaming it, it will still brown but not as much as it would if it was placed on direct heat.
I personally prefer this approach as you don't need to monitor nor babysit the corn for the entire duration of the cooking process.
I like to keep things simple by using all purpose seasoning, my homemade version btw, it goes with almost everything!
However, you are more than welcome to throw in any of the following;
- Vegan Cheese
- Jerk Seasoning
- Ranch Dressing
- Lemon Pepper Seasoning
- Old bay Seasoning
- Seafood Seasoning
- Greek Seasoning
- Cajun Seasoning
As you can see there are so many seasoning blends that you can use for your corn experience.
In terms of the type of corn to use, first of all corn that is on the cob is what you need. Don't use the loose kernels for this particular recipe, save that for another time.
Organic corn
Whenever I am making corn based recipes, I try to go that extra mile to make sure it is organic albeit it is more expensive but worth it.
Corn that is organic tends to be non GMO, since organic crops are not allowed to be grown with synthetic fertilisers, pesticides, toxic chemicals and other artificial produce.
Irrespective of how corn is grown, it still gets a bad rep because of the modified version of corn that is commonly eaten including corn chips, butter popcorn, corn flour, corn oil, high fructose corn syrup and other packaged food products.
A lot of people are divided, some people won't eat corn, while others will. Even though corn is an insoluble fibre, source of food (meaning it travels through the digestive system unabsorbed and passes through the large colon intact and not broken down).
This inability for corn not to digest can be seen as a positive as it acts as a sweeper and helps to clean out your colon, in other words it faciliates bowel movements.
Corn is also packed with antioxidants, vitamins and minerals.
The steps
- Mix together the melted vegan butter with the all purpose seasoning.
- Preheat the air fryer.
- Place a piece of foil on a large plate with one of the corn on a cob(s).
- Liberally coat the corn with the buttery mix, rotating it so all of the corn is coated.
- Wrap the corn by rolling the foil onto the corn then scrunching the ends to seal them.
- Repeat the above steps with the remaining corn.
- Place the wrapped foil in the air fryer basket (you may need to do this in batches depending on the capacity).
- Air fryer at 190C/374F for 20 minutes, turning half way through.
- Once cooked, allow the corn to cool down before unwrapping.
- Apply more of the buttery mix if desired and serve.
Frequently asked questions
Yes, absolutely, if you don't want to shuck the corn, that's fine. Just make sure it is washed and dried first and remove any of the excess silk and any loose husk.
When you are air frying the corn, you will wrap the corn and cook it unseasoned.
Add the buttery mix AFTER the corn has cooked (removing the husk first when it is cool enough to do so then apply the seasoning.
Yes it is, however you will need to leave it on the kitchen counter to defrost first (this should take anything from 30 minutes to one hour).
Check that the corn is thoroughly defrost before cooking. You may need to adjust the cooking time by a few extra minutes because it was frozen.
If you have any leftovers, keep them wrapped in the foil and completely cold. Store in an air tight container before refrigerating them for no more than 2 days.
Notes and tips
- This is the link that you will need to make my Homemade All Purpose Seasoning.
- Do a taste test once you add the all purpose seasoning to the butter to determine how much pink salt and pepper that you may need.
- Keep in mind that every air fryer performs differently so the cooking time may vary.
- For best results, serve the cobs while they are hot.
- Remember to store any leftovers (once cool) wrapped in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
- Reheat the cobs while wrapped in your air fryer for a few minutes.
- You might want to check the corn kernels before removing the foil packet from the air fryer, they should be tender and easy to prick with a fork.
- I managed to fit 4 ears of wrapped corn in my air fryer, but this may vary depending on the capacity of your unit.
- Make sure the foil is large enough to accommodate the corn. My wraps were 12''x 8inches
